What documents do I need to sell my car

If you're getting ready to sell, the paperwork side is usually quicker to sort than people expect. The honest answer to "what documents do I need to sell my car" is: a handful of things, most of which are already sitting in a drawer somewhere. Here's what matters and why.

The V5C logbook

This is the big one. The V5C, or logbook, shows who the registered keeper is and confirms details like the car's colour, engine size and registration date. You don't legally own the car through the V5C, but no genuine buyer will take a car without one.

If you can't find it, you can apply for a replacement from the DVLA. It costs a small fee and normally takes a couple of weeks to arrive, so it's worth checking early rather than leaving it until the day you want to sell.

Service history

A service history isn't essential in the sense that you can't sell without one, but it does help build a clear picture of how the car's been looked after. A full main-dealer history is nice to have, but a folder of receipts and stamps from independent garages is just as useful. If your history is mostly digital, print it or have it ready to show.

Missing a service or two isn't unusual and won't stop a sale. Just be upfront about any gaps.

A valid MOT

If your car is over three years old, it needs a valid MOT to be sold and driven on the road. Buyers will want to know how much MOT is left, and any advisories noted on the last test are worth mentioning honestly rather than letting someone find them later.

If your MOT has lapsed, get it renewed before you try to sell, or be clear that the car will need transporting rather than driven away.

Keys

Both sets, if you have them. A second key isn't just convenient, it's something buyers specifically ask about, since replacing a lost key can be expensive depending on the car. If you genuinely only have one key, that's fine, just say so upfront rather than it becoming an awkward surprise later.

Proof of ID and address

You'll usually need to prove who you are and where you live, typically a driving licence and something like a recent utility bill or bank statement. This is standard practice to prevent fraud and confirm you're entitled to sell the vehicle. It's a quick check, not a hurdle.

A settlement letter if the car is on finance

If there's outstanding finance on the car, you'll need a settlement figure from the finance company before it can be sold. This letter shows exactly how much is owed to clear the finance in full. Most lenders can provide this quickly online or over the phone.

This matters because a car can't be sold with finance still owing against it. Any reputable buyer will ask about this directly, and it's far better to have the figure ready than to find out partway through the process.

Anything else worth having

It helps to also have:

  • Any spare parts or accessories, like a parcel shelf or locking wheel nut
  • Your MOT certificate history if you have paper copies
  • Details of any outstanding recalls, if known

None of these are dealbreakers, but they make the handover smoother.

What if something's missing

Missing paperwork doesn't usually mean a car can't be sold, it just means being honest about it upfront. A logbook can be replaced. A missing service record can be explained. Even a single key or lapsed MOT is something a straightforward buyer can work around, as long as it's flagged early rather than discovered on the day.

How this fits with selling to us

When you get an instant valuation with The Car Buying Club, we'll talk you through exactly what's needed for your specific car before we agree a price. Once that price is agreed, it's the price you get, no last-minute deductions for paperwork surprises. You can read more about how selling to us works, and if you're ready to hand the car over, we also offer collection so you don't have to drive anywhere.

If you're local to us, our Wickford car selling page has more on the process in your area.

Common questions

Can I sell my car without the V5C logbook? It's much harder and most buyers, including us, will want it in hand. If yours is lost, apply to the DVLA for a replacement before you plan to sell.

Do I need a full service history to sell my car? No, but having whatever records you do have ready to show helps build trust and can support the price you're offered.

What if my car is still on finance? You'll need a settlement letter from your finance company showing the amount owed, so it can be cleared as part of the sale. Check our FAQ for more on how this works in practice.
